University of Northern Iowa professor Lou Honary and his team have created SoyTrak a soybean based railroad track grease. The product aims to expand Iowa soybeans markets and could stabilize prices if produced in volume. Norfolk Southern Railway will adopt SoyTrak replacing petroleum grease.
Norfolk Southern, based in Norfolk Virginia, will use about 1.8 million pounds of SoyTrak grease annually on its 21 500 miles of tracks and 1 800 trains per day. John Samuels, senior vice president of operations, says the grease reduces rail wear and helps trains negotiate curves safely. The U S market for rail grease is about 9 million pounds with a 1 million pound purchase this year positioning SoyTrak as a leading soy based option.
The Gazette notes about 1 million visitors expected at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines from Thursday to August 17. Rides include the Skyscraper and Ejection Seat on Expo Hill.
