Cornell College Hall Renovation Begins in Mount Vernon
A $580000 upgrade of Cornell College’s Old Main in Mount Vernon started July 11, with Schoff Construction directing work. The plan preserves the 1857 Georgian architecture while adding insulation new wiring plumbing and heating and creating more offices classrooms and a language lab for several departments.

Iowa Power Seeks 3.6 Percent Gas Rate Increase
Iowa Power filed with the Iowa Commerce Commission for a 3.6 percent increase in natural gas rates. Executive VP James R. Lyon said the move would raise revenues by 1.8 million and apply to meters read starting Oct 1. The hike would be bond funded and refunded with interest after commission review, costing the average gas heating household about 8.50 dollars more per year. A prior rate increase request totaling 3.1 million is also pending, with collections starting July 1, 1976, and no ruling yet.

More Rain Seen Then Sunny Skies
Dense fog reduced visibility to a quarter mile in parts of Eastern Iowa Wednesday before dissipation. Overnight lows stayed comfortable as the National Weather Service projected little change through Thursday with warmer temperatures. Wednesday highs were in the 80s and Thursday in the 80s north to low 90s south, with scattered showers and thunderstorms ending by breakfast and re developing later in the day. Burlington reported the greatest rainfall at 0.15 inches.
