Buch Has Top Selling Steer at Vinton Fair

The reserve grand champion beef steer owned by Rod Buch, 11, of Keystone sold for $70 per hundredweight at the Benton county fair sale. The 1,200-pound Simmental-Angus crossbred steer was bought by Citizens State Savings Bank of Belle Plaine. 55 steers sold overall, prices down to $37.50 per hundredweight, as the fair wrapped with an eight-hour beef show.

Farm Mews swine and dairy champions named at fair

Gene Schwartz, 17 of Vinton, named top junior swine showman with reserve pen of three pigs. Todd Hagen showed the champion gilt, Paul Hagen, 16 of Van Horne, had the reserve. Alan Schminke, 10 of Van Horne, won champion and reserve in Chester White. Pan Reinhardt, 14 of Luzerne, led Spotted champion pen and individual. John Schulte, Norway, exhibited grand champion dairy animal a seven-year-old Brown Swiss. Mark Schulte, 14, reserve Brown Swiss. Additional champions included Jersey, Ayrshire, and senior/junior showman titles across several exhibitors.

Market Swine and Lambs Top Beef at West Liberty Fair Sale

Market animals dominated the West Liberty fair auction as swine outsold cattle and sheep. Tom Townsley of Letts sold two hogs for 61 dollars per hundredweight totaling 415 pounds, while Scott Kraft topped lamb sales at 50 per cwt. The event featured 1,160 steers, 130 market beef entries, and numerous breed champions across Shorthorn, Hereford, Angus, Jersey, Guernsey, Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, and Yorkshire listings, with notable top prizes awarded to Dekamp and West Liberty exhibitors.
