Iowa farmers express unease about the shift to larger farms. A Wallaces Farmer poll shows 46% want government action to discourage large farms, while 43% favor neutrality and 10% are undecided. Responses vary by income and party, with many favor targeted policy options to curb farm consolidation.
DES MOINES UPI Bruce Russell president of the Farmers National Bank of Omaha predicted a rapid drop in the number of farmers and a rise in farm size. He told the Iowa Conference of Production Credit Associations that within ten years no more than 5 percent of the population may be farmers. He said the smaller farmer base could push those remaining to organize and run their own business while many could not afford the high costs of modern machines.
An old advertisement promises relief for denture wearers whose plates loosen or slip. It touts FAS as an alkaline powder that keeps teeth firm, reduces plate odor and breath issues, and should be bought at drug counters.
James Schmelzer of Elma died when his car entered a T intersection 12 miles southwest of here early Wednesday. It marked the third traffic death at the intersection this year in Mitchell county. Father Leo Leagan of New Hampton was killed there last Friday, and Francis Brannon of Elma died in a tractor accident on February 24.
Quasqueton city council accepted Mayor Donald Stanford’s resignation effective immediately. Claire Miller was named mayor and Joel Hazewinkel was named to Miller’s post on the council.

Republican attorneys in Iowa’s 13th district voted 20 to 3 against endorsing 82 year old District Judge T H Goheen for a fourth term. They cited his age as the sole basis for decline. Goheen plans to seek another term and the party will decide at the Calmar convention.
Iowa City organizers announce a goal of 77967.35 for the Community Givers third combined fundraising campaign. The target exceeds last year by about 3400 and covers 69837.48 in allocations to 15 participating agencies plus 8129.87 for administrative expenses.

A hearing on the 1961 Delaware county budget is scheduled for August 18 at the county board of supervisors office in Manchester. Supervisors seek a total appropriation of 1 241 300 with 694 000 to be raised by taxation and a tax rate of 8 mills in towns and 20 mills in rural areas.
The U S labor department reported 1 747 Iowa workers were underpaid 216 044 dollars in minimum wage and overtime for the year ending June 30. Most errors were time and a half violations. 41 minors worked illegally. Across an eight state region 11 135 workers were underpaid and 470 minors found illegally employed.
Marengo Garlan Block 33 Hartwick is hospitalized with undetermined injuries after a one car crash two miles south of Belle Plaine on highway 212 late Tuesday evening. Authorities say Block cannot explain how the accident occurred.
The Oelwein city council recommended awarding the runway improvement project to Iowa Road Builders Co of Fairmont Minnesota for 79398 dollars. The contract awaits Federal Aviation Administration approval. A public hearing on the 1961 budget is set for August 22 with a millage rate of 28.67, up from 22.76, to fund street work public safety and sanitation.
Iowa Farm Bureau board urged congressional leaders from both parties to pass adequate land retirement legislation in a forthcoming special session. The statement said farmers will not accept promises and urged action now to cut surplus production and tailor farming to market demand.
DES MOINES The Iowa Department of the Disabled American Veterans voiced disappointment with a legislative poll on veterans and homestead exemptions. Of 267 lawmakers, 133 replied. 115 supported the veterans tax program. Candidates’ positions varied on exemptions and unemployment pay.
Ellen Burke 17 of Argyle died at University Hospitals in Iowa City from injuries from a car crash that occurred more than three months earlier. She was alone in the car which left the road and overturned about three miles south of Donnellson on April 23.
