Extension prompts costly 33rd Avenue SW project
Crews move a high pressure gas line in southwest Cedar Rapids to clear space for a long awaited road project. The planned nine tenths mile extension of 33rd Avenue SW from 10th Street to 18th Street SW will require viaducts over rail lines and Prairie Creek at an estimated total of 10 to 11 million dollars. The city expects 15,000 drivers on the new route by 2030, with additional residential widening planned and local funds plus federal money supporting the plan. The city will also hire appraisal firms to discuss compensation with homeowners for yard space loss.
