Declarer was happy at the opening lead. West should have attacked hearts but ducked in dummy and won East's jack with his queen. He led a crafty jack of diamonds hoping for a duck, planning clubs to reach nine tricks. When the diamond jack went to East the scene set for a strong picture.
The dealer South faced a spade focus by East and West with high cards scarce. Three spades, a club, and a diamond went to the defense while declarer went down one. A different opening play might have altered the outcome.
