Louis Budenz, former managing editor of the Daily Worker, told Washington on Monday that possibly thousands of Communists have entered federal employment. He cited several score in fairly important positions and several hundred in relatively important posts, and said the party runs an underground Washington lobby to sway policy.
The House un American Activities Committee subpoenas Whitaker Chambers of Time magazine as a witness in its Communist investigation. Acting Chairman Mundt says Chambers is not a suspect and the committee will question all persons named by Elizabeth Bentley with public defense opportunities.
William Rogers cautioned Budenz during a Senate inquiry as he claimed the Communist party finances include a very big take from Hollywood. He described the party as a fifth column and named Jacob Golos as head of a secret control commission while noting the difficulty of counting government- employed communists. He said the party finances come from dues gifts and Hollywood profits, with a faction dispute over Hollywood money.
Gen. Lucius D. Clay reports currency reform begun June 20 has boosted ration levels and industry to postwar highs. July ration reach 1990 calories daily in the Anglo American zone, with August set at 1755. Meat deliveries tripled after reform and production efficiency improved despite Berlin blockade. Socialists report low Western Berlin ration registrations in the Soviet sector. Five thousand Berlin women join West to honor pilots killed in the airlift.
Fifteen Lisbon youngsters staged a Thursday carnival to benefit Camp Good Health. Proceeds totaled $5.25, noted in The Gazette, with numerous local children signing the contribution. Camp Good Health entered its seventh week with the operating fund still $1,000 short of the year, while over 100 visitors toured the camp grounds on visiting day.
Dayton officials told Governor Herbert the Univis Lens plant would reopen Tuesday and requested guard aid. The Ohio National Guard would move in to preserve order if reopening occurred amid a 90 day strike and violence. CIO union members rejected a tentative settlement as about 200 picketers gathered at the entrance.
Cedar Rapids dairy buyers face a second summer price boost as most dairy products add one cent. Regular milk climbs to 18 cents a quart, homogenized 19 cents, coffee cream 22 cents a half pint, and whipping cream 35 cents. Dairymen cite higher production costs and align with Iowa city prices after earlier July 1 rise.
Washington officials argue that a U S economic downturn would not derail the Marshall Plan recovery program in Europe. They say weaker U S demand could actually spur ERP efforts while Russia gains propaganda, conversions, and market gold flows from a crisis.
Belgrade reports Russia circulated a Danube pact plan at a conference, seeking exclusive East Bloc control over the 1,800 mile trade artery. Andrei Vishinsky said he will present the document formally Tuesday. The plan is viewed as certain to pass with little change, as Communist states outvote the Western Powers seven to three.
Charles Sanders reports the second annual Community Sports Festival drew crowds at Ellis Park with events across the grounds. Highlights included Cedar Rapids drum corps, Sea Scouts water races, and a busy waterfront with multiple boat heats and awards. a late softball slate was canceled when the Chicago Hottentots did not appear.
Mrs Charles Summers 30, wife of a chemical worker, is in good condition after delivering her third set of twins in 27 months. The newborns Charles and John weighed four pounds each, joining Susan and Patricia born May 26, 1946 and Michael and Paul born Sept. 2, 1947.
Harmony Pa volunteers raised 17000 dollars over two years for a new fire truck. The truck arrived eight inches too tall for the firehouse entrance. The 500 volunteers now raise funds for a new firehouse.
Washington Republicans failed to end the three day Southern anti poll tax filibuster as Senate President Vandenberg blocked a clo ture move. The petition to limit debate was filed by Acting Republican Leader Wherry with eight Democratic supporters and opposed by Democrats including Barkley and Pepper.
Cedar Rapids stores report 21 cent packs Monday while others hold at 20 cents. A service station sold at 16 cents per pack, or 1.60 a carton, the lowest in the Gazette poll. Carton prices run 1.60 to over 1.75 as wholesalers raise prices. P Lorillard and Co has not yet increased.
Asheville officials ordered a ban on all public gatherings to combat North Carolina's polio outbreak. Residents stayed home as streets pools theaters and churches went silent and the resort area's tourism faded. The year's polio cases in the state were reported at 1 095.

Former Education Commissioner John W. Studebaker charges government censorship blocked speeches exposing communist influence in schools. He blames Oscar Ewing and says attempts to tone down remarks were directed by federal officials, while Ewing denies censorship. Studebaker sent letters to Senate and House appropriations committees urging disclosure and defense of educational duty.
Air France hopes for recovery of a Latecoere flying boat with 52 aboard after disappearing south of Dakar while en route from Martinique to West Africa. Sixteen crew members and 40 passengers, mainly Europeans, are listed. search by warships and planes continues. The craft, 175 foot wingspan, 132 feet long, radio failure suspected.
President Truman walked through Independence Missouri streets on a return visit greeting residents with Hi Harry. Ray Dickerson a farmer in a straw hat stopped his farm truck to rush across and clap Truman on the back as others waved and called him Harry.
London Reuters reported Shanghai markets were thrown into panic by a rumor that a war had broken out in Europe. The claim spread as traders reacted to alarming headlines and uncertain prices amid global tensions.
United States ambassador Walter Bedell Smith British envoy Frank Roberts and French Ambassador Yves Chataigneau met Stalin in Moscow with aims to ease Berlin tensions and lay groundwork for four power talks on Germany and other issues. No ultimatum was reported.

A load of top quality hogs sold at Cleveland for 32 dollars per hundred pounds, Chicago saw 31.10, surpassing the prior 31.00 high. Officials cite dwindling receipts and willingness to pay for choice meat.
A close associate said President Truman has no plan to summon Congress for a second extra session. His party members say he believes Congress will reject his program and that a second session would not alter his fall stumping record.
