Walters faces new charges as OPA director considers resignation
Chicago regional OPA head Rae E Walters offered to resign if Bowles backs him amid charges that 50 resignations and dismissals in the Chicago office stem from a Hitlerlike dictatorship. The accuser Edward Gildea, a former OPA information employee, detailed alleged misuse of power and staff conflicts. Walters denied a dictator’s grip and said he would return to Iowa if required. He admitted aiming to be boss but said Semtts lacked civil service qualifications. Restaurant owner Mammen Isbell was appointed to Stats’y job. Gildea expanded claims to Bowles about Walters’ “tough guy” image. Bowles had no comment. Sullivan reportedly returned to work after two months.
