Corn Silage Outperforms Sorghum-Sudan in Steer Fattening
A U S Department of Agriculture report finds sorghum-sudan hybrids do not replace corn silage in fattening trials. Yields reach about 25 tons per acre with two cuttings, versus 10 tons for widerrow corn, but feed value differs. After 140 days, corn silage steers gained 0.21 pounds more per day, while sorghum-sudan yielded 145 pounds less. Prices show corn silage at $8 per ton, sorghum-sudan at $5, and income variation influences consumption patterns.

FS Services Sells Shenandoah Plan and 4H State Fair Winners
Iowa 4H girls from Delaware county, Carla Holthaus and Susie Wilson, were chosen to compete in 11 clothing categories at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines August 19 to 28 after last week’s county fair in Manchester. Purchasers are Farmers Regional Cooperative of Dodge City Kansas and Missouri Farmers Assn. of Columbia Missouri. FS Services says the Shenandoah plan sale was due to improper size and location. A Washington move by Sen. McGovern to urge studies of price rises in milk and wheat, with the aim to argue producer price increases do not justify consumer boosts and redress at tail levels.
