Voters in southeast Cedar Rapids head to polls today to choose a new representative for House District 78. Republican Bernie Hayes faces Democrat Angel Ramirez to fill the unexpired term of Sami Scheetz, who resigned to join the Linn County Board of Supervisors. Polls run 7 AM to 8 PM. absentee ballots must be returned by close.

Marion man charged after crash ends pregnancy
Marion man Trenton Eiben, 42, faced charges including serious injury by motor vehicle and willful injury after a February crash in Cedar Rapids. He allegedly drove a tan Pontiac Sunfire at 84 to 89 mph in a center turn lane, colliding with a silver Chevrolet Traverse carrying Merlin Bowden, whose 18 week pregnant status ended due to injuries. Bowden’s pelvic bones and ribs were fractured in the crash. Eiben appeared in court and was held on a cash only $100000 bail.
