Native plantings promote healthier nesting for cardinals and robins
Ohio State researchers Kathi Borgmann and Amanda Rodewald report in Ecological Applications that northern cardinals and American robins nesting in exotic shrubs like multiflora rose and non native honeysuckle suffer higher nest losses to predators, especially in urban areas. Predators are mainly small mammals, and nests in non native shrubs near the ground are more vulnerable, supporting native plant advocacy for city planning to limit exotic species.
