Phet Baccam 20, charged with first degree murder and first degree robbery in Gloria Stout’s killing at Pemco Mini Mart near Keystone. He allegedly traveled to Cedar Rapids the day of the crime, told acquaintances about the shooting, then returned to Des Moines. Bail set at 1.15 million after court reversal of hold without bond. Stout, mother of four and Pemco manager, was found shot thrice on April 19.
Former Iowa State football player Levin White pleaded guilty to armed robbery in a March Burger King hold up in Ames. The Story County Attorney dropped kidnapping and terrorism charges in exchange for the plea. White faces a June sentence with a possible 25 year term. Sam Mack, a former ISU basketball player, remains jailed on a $60,000 bond as he awaits trial on related charges.
Judge Lynne Brady upheld Alburnett High School's ruling that 17 year old Jayme Wessels cannot take Dolores Washburn 35, married mother of four, to the Junior-Senior Prom. Principal Raymond Cull said there are no winners and warned media attention distracted students. Washburn defended the decision as a right to voice opinion while noting no plan to appeal.
