President Carter formally submits his Middle East jet fighter sale proposals to Congress. House committee leader Rep Zablocki says 15 votes in favor, 12 against, enough to block any disapproval. The package covers 75 F‑16s and 15 F‑15s to Israel, 60 F‑15s to Saudi Arabia, and 50 F‑5s to Egypt.
The government announced a 6.5 percent boost to Social Security payments for 35.4 million beneficiaries starting July 3 and to Supplemental Security Income recipients from June 30. The adjustment follows CPI rises and raises average retiree checks from 239 to 254 monthly, SSI max from 177.80 to 189.40, and a couple’s SSI from 266.70 to 284.10. The HEW estimate cites a 6.2 billion cost to the Social Security trust fund in the 1979 fiscal year.
