Canney Backs Federal Job Program at Hughes Hearing
Cedar Rapids Mayor Donald Canney was among 25 witnesses at a Waterloo hearing of the senate labor and public welfare committee chaired by Senator Harold Hughes. He urged extension of the Emergency Employment Act and warned that lack of summer youth funding would leave about 500 Cedar Rapids youths without jobs. He cited the act as a successful program and criticized a labor department option to fund summer youth work by removing other employment funds. The hearing, at the Black Hawk county courthouse, aims to inform special revenue sharing legislation and Nixon proposals.
