The Iowa Senate approved a bill allowing cities to obtain federal aid for low cost public housing with an amendment setting income ceilings for eligible families. The measure returns to the house after Thursday approval, with Sen. George OMalley urging no amendments to avoid time constraints.
Natick Massachusetts reports that Thomas Connolly, 90, the dean of American league umpires and the first to be elected to the baseball hall of fame, died Friday at his home.
Carlos Mendoza 18 of 517 Bave NE received a suspended 30 day sentence after pleading guilty to trespassing, down from malicious property damage. He and three others were arrested for damaging a gasoline tank at the Spencer Stevenson farm near Center Point. Robert G. Jeffords 17 of Springville was given until Tuesday to plead to malicious injury to property and breaking jail after arraignment following the Stevenson farm incident.
The Linn County Board of Supervisors will hold a hearing May 15 at 1 30 P M in Cedar Rapids on amendments to the Rural Ordinance concerns mobile homes and mobile home parks. Proposals include defining mobile home park terms and adding permit and site requirements. zoning changes may follow for various districts.
Seventeen suit filed by Thomas Hughes of Hughes Garage against Gilbert Paulsen for 149.32 on account. Will admitted for Edward C. Kinley who died December 14 1960 naming Monticello State Bank as executor and wife Winifred Kinley as heir.
Court records show the woman has a history of bad checks or forgeries in Missouri Tennessee West Virginia California and Canada. She was returned to Cedar Rapids several days ago. The two other youths charged Gary W Williams 16 Robins and Robert W Ross 19 856 Eleventh St NE remain in Linn county jail awaiting trial.
Kenneth L. Butters, 39, of Oelwein, was found innocent of a drunk driving charge by a Linn County district court jury after a trial that began Monday in Judge Floyd Philbrick's court. The charge stemmed from a two car crash on November 1 in Hiawatha. The judge dismissed the case with prejudice. Glenn D. Ingenfritz, 51, of 1553 Eave. NE, convicted of a third offense drunk driving last week, filed a motion for a new trial arguing insufficient evidence and unfair proceedings. Sentencing was deferred.
Troy Laundry and Dry Cleaners won a temporary injunction from Judge Sandee Jordan blocking the local Teamsters union from picketing two Troy laundries at 214 First St SW and at Thirty-second St and First Ave E. The union had set up pickets since April 29, 1959, naming Harry Wilford Melvin J Smith John Zahorik Beverly Hollingsworth and Edith Hellenthal as co defendants.
Helen Burton, 43, of San Diego, was sentenced to seven years in the Rockwell City reformatory after pleading guilty to a false check charge. She allegedly gave a $301.80 bogus check to Eagle Food Store on January 11 and wrote another instrument in the incident.
Thomas Hoening aged 22 pled guilty to operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent before Judge Floyd Philbrick. He received six months in Linn County jail but the sentence was suspended. Hoening must be held for Milaca authorities for violation of a five year parole for breaking and entering. The alleged theft involved a car owned by Oval Dronesbarger on December 26 at Walker. William Van derpool age 20 of 1613 Dave NE pled guilty before Judge B J Maxwell to contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He was fined $100 and given a suspended 30 day jail sentence Friday.
Harvey J. Townsend, residing at 819 Tenth St. SW, was committed Friday to the screening center at the Mental Health Institute of Independence. He was arrested last week on charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm.
Eugene R. Mc Conaughy of Marion filed an appeal in Linn district court challenging a Marion police court judgment of 10 dollars for a traffic signal violation.
A Cedar Rapids woman, Mrs. Donald E. Mitchell, 5700 Ohio St. SW, was charged with petty larceny after admitting she took a purse from a downtown Kresge’s store. The purse holder was Mary M. Decious, 335 Nineteenth St. SE, and the items included $2 and a $92.87 check. Mitchell was released on her own recognizance and ordered to appear for trial on May 16 after detectives traced her from a clerk’s identification and a later attempted cashing of the check using a found charge plate.
