Sigourney services for Mrs. John L. Herman, 56, of Sigourney will be held Wednesday in St. Ambrose Cathedral Des Moines. The obituary notes her husband and family details in a local notice.
The Cedar Rapids Industrial Union Council and 6,000 CIO locals protested to President Eisenhower the lifting of rent controls. They challenged Cedar Rapids being removed as a critical defense housing area and highlighted 2,000 migratory workers commuting long distances. They urged action on low cost housing, criticized city officials and the Chamber of Commerce, and objected to May 1 trailer court closure and a street decal barn site purchase. They asked federal housing program coverage and urged consideration of workers' pain.
Richard N. Massey, accused of prowling a nurses home and escaping under gunfire, was charged with burglary and held on a $10,000 bond. Detectives traced him via a union badge on a cap. two forehead wounds matched police findings. He was tackled by Captain Steve Seward as he fled.
Washington In testimony before the senate commerce subcommittee Col. C. T. Tench said he recommended against fingerprinting or firing ex criminals to avoid labor trouble. He noted the final decision to avoid fingerprinting came from Brig. Gen. Robert G. Lovett.
Washington Secretary of Commerce Weeks told the U S Chamber of Commerce there will be no sudden drop in defense production and no old fashioned depression even if peace comes. He predicted a peacetime boom with higher living standards and growth in world trade, cautioning against undue gloom from a minority in business and media.
Orlin J. Emmons 68, Springville banker, died Monday from a heart attack. Born Sept 13, 1884 near Central City he lived in Springville most of his life, married Margaret J. Butler in 1911, worked in St. Louis as a salesman, then rejoined Springville Exchange Bank in 1913. Survived by wife, daughter Clara Woerderhoff, son Joe, and three grandchildren. Funeral Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Hunt Funeral Home with burial in Springville Cemetery.
Four year old Jimmie B Sanders fell 15 feet into Duck Creek east of Bettendorf. Garden rake aid by Carl Lowry hooked the boy and Bettendorf officer Russell Ellis pulled him to safety. He remained hospitalized in Davenport in critical condition.
Mark Harpenau, 3, son of Mr and Mrs Isa dore Harpenau, died at a Sioux City hospital from burns suffered when a grass fire ignited his clothing on a farm north east of Remsen.
In Cedar Rapids Dick Madison stands trial on a third offense drunk driving charge. Evidence began Tuesday with a jury selected Monday in Judge Floyd Philbrick's court. County Attorney Willis A. Glassgow and assistant Richard F. Nazette present the state's case. Jurors include R. H. Peck Lucille B. Yeator Mayme Upson Ray V. Quaid Howard F. Nandell Kathryn E. Pfeiffer Louis E. Doty Vergil Wasendorf Agnes Zobac Gladys M. James Frank Farman and Robert Vogel from Cedar Rapids Clinton township and Marion.
Solon resident Frank Maresh, 63, pled guilty to a second drunken driving offense and was fined $500 plus costs by Judge Floyd Philbrick. He may pay $100 down and $50 monthly after a Monday arrest on Highway 84 near Hawk Eye Downs. Patrolman Harry Cloud cited erratic driving. Maresh previously convicted for a 1942 Linn County DUI.
Edwin Hetherington dies April 16 and his will assigns $100 to Cedar Rapids YMCA, Children's Home, Sunshine Mission, Home for Aged Women, and Community House. He also leaves $1,000 to Mrs. W A Gatzke of Hollywood and $500 to Edwin B. Zeller. The estate is divided among several relatives after specific personal bequests. Merchants National Bank serves as executor without bond.
Everette J. Bertelsen filed a replevin petition against Wayne Bertelsen claiming ownership of a $4300 trailer and seeking possession of the vehicle from the defendant. The suit requests the court to grant return of the trailer to the plaintiff.
Voters in Sioux City and Mason City decide whether to adopt the council manager form of government. Campaigns intensify with supporters led by M. J. Spelberg and the League of Women Voters opposing by Mayor Ralph Henderson and the Good Government Committee.
Manila AP report says Gen Mac Arthur plans a visit to the Philippines soon. Col Anthony Story said MacArthur told him of the plans in New York. A Remington Rand spokesman noted no current Manila or Far East visit plans. MacArthur chairs Remington Rand.
A group of residents protests quarry blasting as vibration expert Jules E Jenkins finds no earth-shake damage to five inspected houses. He notes minor defects exist in any building and urges residents to hire their own examiner, with reimbursement as public policy. Commercial club officials witnessed a blast and may inspect loads. further tests deemed unnecessary.
The senate debated a $10 million departmental appropriation bill with amendments as the legislature nears session end. Key changes include raising the health commissioner salary to 8 000 dollars annually, boosting tuberculosis control funds to 50 000 for mobile X ray units, and closing the Grand Army of the Republic office. A compromise on education funding and a permanent income tax rate were also advanced as both chambers push toward final passage.
Calvin M. Dresher of Cedar Rapids died Monday in Sumner after a lingering illness. Born March 9, 1876 in Siam Page County, he is survived by son Ralph F. Dresher of Cedar Rapids daughter Mrs Floyd Crawford of Anamosa two sisters Mrs George Hyde Sumner and Mrs Louella Skinner Cedar Rapids six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. His wife had preceded him in death. Services set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Berg funeral home Sumner with graveside rites at Linwood Cemetery Cedar Rapids at 4:30 p.m.
Robert Hugh Newell died Sunday in Los Angeles after a sudden illness. Born March 21, 1889, in Wapello, he moved to California 20 years ago with his wife Adelaide Evans. Surviving are son Keith Newell of Cedar Rapids, sister Edna Edwards of Los Angeles, and three grandchildren. A Methodist, he will be buried in Shiloh Cemetery after services at Turner chapel.

Bridget Kelly 77 of Cedar Rapids died Monday night after a long illness in Mt. Pleasant hospital. Widow of John Kelly she was born at Kinross. Surviving a daughter Mrs. Frank Headman San Jose California and a sister Miss Mary Hanley Cedar Rapids. Funeral at Parnell Thursday at 9 am.
Anna Mary Kluber wife of Frank J Kluber of 490 Edgewood road SW Cedar Rapids died Monday. Funeral services will be at St Ludmila's Catholic Church at 9 30 am Thursday with Rev Frank R Hruby. Burial in St John's cemetery. Rosary at 7 30 pm Wednesday in Turner chapel. Friends may call.

UPI report details a burst of shelling on Vegas Hill that killed about 67 Americans from two bunkers. Survivors Navy Hospital Corpsman Thomas Waddill and Marines Lacey and Owen recount suffocation, injuries, and captivity after Chinese forces overran the position on March 26.

In Swinton England a tunnel on an abandoned railway line collapsed trapping two houses in a yawning hole. Four women and one man died while others, aged 87 to over 100, were rescued as rescue teams pried through brick and rubble. One fireman was injured during the effort to salvage victims.
