Passenger pigeons extinct, 1871 migration cited in Wisconsin
McGregor Times files reveal in May 1871 that hundreds of thousands of passenger pigeons were trapped and shipped from southwestern Wisconsin to eastern markets. The spring flights darkened skies, with daily exports to Milwaukee Chicago St Louis Cincinnati Philadelphia New York and Boston. By the mid 1870s only small flocks remained and by the 1880s the species largely vanished from the Upper Mississippi region. A mounted specimen owned by W H C Elwell of McGregor memorializes the tragedy.
