Shoestring budget trees grow on campus project
A shoestring operation at the university warms seeds in winter, plants 500 of 600 sprouted trees in May, and places about 100 saplings at the USN nursery on Melrose Avenue to reach a 2 inch trunk over five years. The rest are planted at wooded campus sites including a five acre savannah between Highway 6 and Hawkins Drive. Next month a second crop of 1,300 trees will be planted from seeds gathered last fall. The effort saves money versus buying 2 inch oaks at $200 each and provides winter work.

UI Focus Group Highlights Perceived Bias in Athletics
A Westerhaus led focus group of about 20 minority athletes at UI found most felt coaches were fair but some faculty avoided calling on black students in class. They cited unintentional discrimination such as cutoffs of comments and stricter make up quiz policies for athletes missing due to games.
