The Iowa Utilities Board approved the merger of IE Industries of Cedar Rapids and Iowa Southern Inc. of Center ville into IES Industries. Before the holding company becomes official, shareholders and the Securities Exchange Commission must approve the deal.

He is expected to face federal charges for the April 18 Hills Bank robbery and the Friday Hawkeye State Bank heist in downtown Iowa City. Cash recovered is being tested to confirm its bank of origin. He will appear in U S District Court in Des Moines.
A 77 year old Cedar Rapids woman fended off a purse snatcher with her cane along Fourth Avenue SE. Police describe the assailant as a about 22 year old man wearing a blue sweatshirt. She was treated for chest pains and released from Mercy Medical Center after overnight observation.
