Roy Skogman president of Skogman Homes said Attorney General Turner ruling that lenders may not charge points on loans above 35000 has caused pandemonium in Iowa's home building industry. He urged common sense and noted immediate builder impact if in process loans are halted. Lenders assess effects and many plan to close existing loans.
Bonnette, a 29 year old nurse, was seized by a masked man with a long knife and forced to drive from Kirkwood toward Tama County. After a two hour ordeal near a Chelsea bridge she fled into nearby woods, escaping as the assailant injured himself and chased her to a farmhouse. Police were alerted and Bonnette described the predator as a tall black man in his 20s with a white shop and belligerent behavior.
Fire damaged the west Cedar Rapids residence of Mrs. Rose Marie Meyers. Her 4 month old son Steven was handed to her after 12 year old Danny Meyers, aided by Henry Hansen, rescued him amid the blaze. The Meyers and Walker families lost their home. Red Cross aid was provided.
John Ehrlichman 53 left Swift Trail Federal Prison Camp after 18 months for his Watergate role. He drove off in a maroon Chevrolet with Lois Boyles and her son, followed by about 50 reporters and photographers. He declined to discuss his feelings and wore casual clothes.
Art Buchwald, visiting Cedar Rapids, collapsed briefly in the Roosevelt Royale Hotel lobby as he prepared to speak at the Paramount Theatre. The syndicated columnist, who had chatted with Mercy Hospital Auxiliary members, recovered quickly after seating himself. He mused about Washington interest in Cedar Rapids and joked about communist troops before heading to his room.
A steel scaffold inside a power plant cooling tower collapsed trapping 51 workers about 150 feet below. Eight family members died. witnesses described the scene as workers fell “like dominoes” and survivors identified several brothers and relatives among the dead.
