Iowa treasurer touts refinancing to cut debt service
Iowa State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald told the Iowa Executive Council that refinancing about 55 million dollars in 2009 I-JOBS and correctional bonds at roughly 2 percent could save the state around 3 million annually in financing charges. He noted potential savings of 2.5 million on I-JOBS and 700 thousand on prison bonds, with a likely one month to six weeks to complete a competitive process with Public Financial Management advising. Governor Branstad endorsed the plan as pay-as-you-go funding to reduce bonded indebtedness while maintaining long term facility upgrades.
