Rate of low birth weight stabilizes in Iowa
Iowa Kids Count report shows the share of newborns weighing 5 pounds or less rose from 5 percent in 1980 to 6.4 percent in 1996 and remained at 6.4 percent from 1996 to 1998. The study notes improvements in some areas but warns that long term data reflect ongoing child welfare challenges.
