Weekend crashes injure eight and hospitalize one

Eight people were injured in weekend traffic crashes with one adult admitted to Mercy hospital ICU. John H. Hoover, 60, of 408 Tenth Street SE, suffered a broken leg and clavicle after colliding with a mail truck driven by Richard Mills, 52, at 9:35 a.m. Saturday. A second three risk wreck on Sixth Street and Wilson Avenue SW involved James Pickens, 57, Cedar Falls, and three others including Richard Lorimer, 16, and Russell Fritz, 23. Declarations include faulty brakes and a red light violation. In another crash, John R. Ortega, 16, was charged with speeding after a two-vehicle collision on Forest Drive SE that injured him. Allen Williams, 38, was treated for injuries in a three-vehicle crash caused by a power outage and wet streets. A Hawatha family of four was injured in a two-car crash on Sixth Street and Fifteenth Avenue SW, with Roselle Emrich admitted for possible head injury, and her sons Devin and Clifton, 11 and 9, and father David Emrich, 33, treated and released.

Lake Search Ends in Foley Death

A lake search near Oelwein ended around noon Saturday as officials and Buchanan County Attorney declined to confirm whether any of Sheila Foley's clothing had been found. The probe followed the lake draining begun Friday after a December discovery near the east edge of the lake. Foley, 16, was found dead in a roadside ditch near Oelwein last December. Gary Frazer of Oelwein faces a first degree murder trial in Allamakee County District Court in Waukon.

New Jersey man sentenced in Cedar Rapids for stolen vehicle

James McGuire, 32, recently living in California, received the maximum five year term in Cedar Rapids federal court after pleading guilty to interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle. He admitted driving a stolen pickup from Colorado to Iowa on March 17.

Driver Assaulted At Stoplight On Sixth Street

Marvin A Waterfield reports he was assaulted at a stoplight on Sixth Street and Sixteenth Avenue SW at 10 10 p m Saturday. A man from a white 1964 car pulled him from his vehicle, kicked him in the face and back after asking about Freddy McCloud. Waterfield was reportedly treated and released by St Luke's hospital, though hospital authorities say no record exists.

Two Boys Rescued From Island in Cedar River

Cedar Rapids firemen rescued two boys from a river island behind Quaker Oats at 7 05 p m Sunday They were identified as Mike Thompson of 1509 Sixth Street NW and Randy Mason of 200 K Avenue NW Authorities said the boys rafted to the island and became stranded and the fire department boat reached them

District Court actions dismiss several drunk driving charges

The First avenue division of Iowa district court recently dismissed four drunk driving charges. Dennis Boyer of 2622 Second avenue SE was fined 300 dollars plus costs for a February 21 guilty plea. Other dismissals include Ronald Fritz, Anya Vanous, Clifford Klouda, and Jerry Greenland for charges filed between February and April. Linda Frederikson received a 20 dollar fine for assault and battery on April 11 after pleading guilty. A possession of a controlled substance charge against Charles Northcutt was dismissed.

Man Faces Heroin Count In Linn County Arrest

David L. Collins, 25, of 1323 Twentieth Avenue SW, was arrested on a warrant charging possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and giving authorities a false name. He allegedly had an unspecified heroin quantity on April 21, was arrested at 11:15 p.m. Sunday for resisting execution of process, and is held in Linn County jail on a $15,000 bond.

Cedar Rapids Man Robbed Twice by Two Youths

Cedar Rapids resident George Ciha reported two white youths chased him and robbed him of $25 on back to back nights in the 600 block of Nineteenth avenue SW. He said Saturday's incident followed a similar robbery the previous night, both involving the same suspects. A separate 30 years ago item notes Ottumwa's mayor being indicted for fraud over surplus government trucks.

Kalona Mourns H V Beck Longtime Town Clerk

H V Beck 80 former businessman and Kalona town clerk died Saturday. Born August 7 1895 in Windham he married Ethel Snair July 30 1919. Survived by wife son Richard daughter Harriet McKenzie seven grandchildren. Funeral details include Masonic services Monday and church service Tuesday with burial at Sharon Hill. Memorial fund established.

Three Iowa youths receive suspended sentences for mail box destruction

Lance Franck 18 Hawkeye Jeffrey Johnson 19 Alpha and Charles Downs 21 New Hampton pleaded guilty in Cedar Rapids federal court to obstructing the mail. They admitted tearing down six rural mail boxes with a crow bar on January 17 in Fayette and Chickasaw counties. They were placed on one year probation and must pay restitution and send written apologies to the mailbox owners.

Furniture Stolen From House on Ely Avenue SW

Antique walnut desk and walnut bench along with oak rocker bunk beds and other items were reported stolen from a residence at 521 Ely avenue SW. Owner Bernise K Harris is listed at 714 Second street SW. The theft occurred in the last few days.

Nine Charged With Drunk Driving by Iowa Officers

Linn deputies, Hiawatha police and state troopers arrested nine persons on drunk driving charges after incidents Friday and Saturday nights. Names include Edwin J. Ama and Martyn J. Barta in Hiawatha, Edwin J. McGee near Marion, Donald R. Atz of Alburnett, and others from Linn County towns. One man, Arlyn Gene Sieck, was treated and released after a Center Point crash.

Gold and equipment stolen from Dubuque dental lab

Dubuque police report more than $13,000 in gold and equipment taken from Oral Arts Inc. burglars smashed a window to enter late Sunday night. Authorities later adjusted gold value to about $12,000 with about $1,500 in equipment missing as the investigation continued.

Mt Vernon Youth Injured When Car Leaves Road

Lee Dana Jensen an 18 year old of Mt Vernon was injured Saturday night when his car ran off Mt Vernon road and into a ditch about two miles northwest of Mt Vernon. Linn deputies said he apparently fell asleep. He was treated at a Cedar Rapids hospital and released.
