Daily Record reports fair Iowa and Illinois forecasts with sun through Sunday and rising clouds by Monday. Temperature highs reach 72 to 74 with mild nights. westerly winds 14 to 18 mph. Fire reports detail several two alarm incidents and various city fines for traffic violations. Includes divorce petitions and multiple birth announcements from local hospitals.
Friday's waste paper drive in Tyler organized by the P T A with St Wenceslaus church and Hus Memorial Presbyterian supported Sinclair Playground development fund. By mid afternoon 9 170 pounds were collected and sold for 82 53, nearly doubling expectations. Children and adults gathered at five centers in the Tyler and St Wenceslaus districts to push the project toward an all year recreation center for area youth.
Iowa legislature adopts a long range plan for county farm to market roads, restricting use of 15 million dollars from the general fund. If motor vehicle revenue for primary and secondary roads exceeds 21 million, the excess up to 25 million goes to farm roads in neediest southern counties. Russell F. Swift, Harlan Democrat, is confirmed for a six year term on the state liquor control commission starting July 1.
Washington AP The justice department announced Monday that it will sue 964 railroads in a case describing millions of dollars in alleged wartime overcharges. The government seeks refunds on military and naval freight moved to overseas points between June 3 1941 and October 1 1946. It claims railroads rejected lower export tariffs on stored freight and charged higher domestic rates instead.
The will of Mrs. Adolph W. H. Lenders, who died Feb 3, was admitted to probate. Three sisters Mrs Katherine Kanealy Miles Agnes Kanealy of Chicago and Ebien Kanealy Cedar Rapids were named executrices. Beneficiaries include Miles 50000 Agnes Kanealy 50000 Ellen Kanealy 30000 and others in Germany Austria and the United States with sums ranging from 10000 to 50000 plus diamond jewelry gifts. Specific bequests may rise if the estate increases in value.
Orville Wright age 35 of 411 First avenue SW was sentenced to five years in the penitentiary at Fort Madison by Judge G K Thompson after pleading guilty to larceny in the theft of a $295 diamond ring from Ginsbergs Jewel Box at 205 Second street SE. Wright said he intended to return the ring and it caught on his coat as he left. Arrest was made April 19. He had entered a plea of innocent essay.
R G Mitchell files in district court seeking $5000 against Cedar Rapids City Lines for injuries from the April 20 1945 crash at Thirty sixth Street and First Avenue E. He alleged the car he rode in, owned and driven by David Miller, was struck by a City Lines bus. Injuries include right shoulder damage, clavicle tract separation, bruised nerves and mental anguish.
Judge G. K. Thompson awarded J. H. Lattimer a $111.85 judgment against Elza Bowers and J. H. Bowers in district court on an account. Fenton Masterhan received a $150 judgment against William Schultz and Estella Schultz for specific performance.
In Anamosa district court Marjorie Monroe filed suit Saturday against C. W. Blood seeking judgment of 187. The petition states Blood issued the note to the deceased husband, G. H. Monroe, dated January 1, 1938.

At Independence, the Mixed chorus took first place with Mt. Vernon while Dysart claimed second. The Girls Glee Club from Mt. Vernon won first with Traer, Dysart and Monona second. Boys Glee Club from Dysart, Monona and Olin placed second. Concert Bands from Belle Plaine, Oelwein, Tipton and Vinton earned first, with DeWitt and Tama second.
Gene Doyle, manager of Gilmore Stadium, said he granted Henry Wallace permission to speak there May 19 under the Progressive Citizens of America. Wallace had been denied use of Hollywood Bowl. Rental arrangements were handled through Robert W. Kenny, PCA southern California chairman.
Police report details show burglars entered via a rear door leading to Fifth Street. Marks on the grill floor indicate money was dragged toward that exit. Club safes were found closed or unlocked by workers, with unclear lock status upon opening. Dan Hennessey, the janitor, found building doors unlocked.

Truman A. Sweet, 73, former Cedar Rapids resident, died Thursday in Central City. Services set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Hatch Funeral Home in Central City, with burial at Coggan.
DES MOINES AP The 1947 Iowa legislature completed its work with both houses accepting a compromise on school aid. The House approved by 90 to 0 and the Senate by 44 to 0, adding nearly 10 million dollars to state school aid. The session concluded except for a few technical tasks to be handled by a skeleton staff next week.
United Airlines stewards a Cedar Rapids inaugural event with a large Iowa contingent. Mentzer and others aboard plan a westbound departure at 1 58 p.m. after a day of ceremonies at Montrose hotel and airport commission welcome. Mentioned attendees include Sen Bourke Hickenlooper, Iowa officials, and local dignitaries as the Mainliner Cedar Rapids christening and inaugural schedule unfold.
A Davenport apartment building fire gutted one unit and displaced a family of six. Four residents escaped from two other apartments as firefighters fought the blaze for two hours. Damage was estimated at several thousand dollars. minimal damage to remaining units.
Boy Scout boards of review will meet at the police station and the B avenue fire station at 7 o'clock tonight. Mr. and Mrs. George H. Walker of 1340 A avenue NE left Saturday for Winter Park Florida called by the illness of Mrs. Walker's sister, Metta Burd, longtime Cedar Rapids resident.
The Cedar Rapids Coin Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the YMCA. The club announced an auction will be held during the meeting, offering coins and related items for bidding.
The Unity Center offers a 11 a m worship with Mabel Swanson leading. A radio broadcast airs at 8 a m, Sunday school at 9 30, and the Guild meets Thursday at 8 p m.
Judge Harry Johnson fined Samir Wendl Hojka and William Hungerford $100 each plus costs after they pled guilty to reckless driving. Hojka, 41, of 1209 Fifth Street SE, was observed by patrolmen Shim ek and Milota drifting near First Avenue and Ninth Street SW after being tracked from the junction of Highways 30 and 149. Hungerford, 32, of 1310 A Avenue NE, was arrested April 21 in the 2300 block on First Avenue East and blocked by two civilians who testified he nearly struck them before he paid his fine.
Bids for five miles of Sixth Street SW from Sixteenth Avenue to the airport in Iowa will be opened May 13 at 10 a.m. in the state highway commission office. About 500000 cubic yards of dirt must be moved for widening and paving preparation. work includes grading excavation topsoil drainage and culvert installations both within and beyond city limits. The bid invitation excludes constructing the North Western railroad overpass and Prairie Creek bridge. J A Paulsen district engineer has not yet received final plans and will travel to Ames Tuesday for more information.
Milwaukee report says bus driver Chris Anton resumed driving after a court dissolved his marriage. Joe Anne Johnston of Eagle River, 20, pursued the driver with daily rides, and a confrontation with Anton’s wife led to a perjury charge against the young passenger. The judge granted a divorce to Mrs. Anton and Anton returned to his route, calling the days lonely.
Dave Hollenbeck aged 22 of 109 Eighth Street SE was fined 100 dollars and costs after pleading guilty to disturbing the peace by fighting in front of the Windsor hotel. Henry Harris of 919 Eleventh Street SE pleaded not guilty and was ordered to appear for trial Monday morning. Harris’ bond was set at 55 dollars by Judge Harry S. Johnson. Police say the men fought. Hollenbeck said Harris drew a knife as he began to lose. Patrolmen Spicher and Morey made the arrests.
Venus Lee Duke, 27, of 1109 Fourth Street SE, was fined $25 and costs in police court Saturday after pleading guilty to drunkenness. He was arrested Friday night by Patrolmen Donald Spicher and Eugene Morey when found sitting in his car on the sidewalk at Ninth Street and Tenth Avenue SE.
DES MOINES UP The legislative interim committee will have only two members who served on the group last year. They are Sen. Robert Reilly from Dubuque and Rep. Gene Poston from Corydon, both Democrats. Other Democrats on the committee include Rep. W. A. Bents of Cresco and Sen. Tunis Klein of Pella. Republican members are Senators Robert Keir of Spencer De Vere Watson of Neen and Otto Henningsen of Clinton, and Representatives Harry Weichman of Newhall Albert Steinig of Ames and C. A. Bryson of Iowa Falls.
Albert Lee Cornwell, 53, was indicted by the Polk County grand jury on a first degree murder charge for the shooting of his former wife's friend, Carl W. Woxell, 54, on a Friday afternoon in Des Moines AP report.
Tokyo reports a landslide victory for conservative parties in Japan’s national election. Middle to right candidates captured about 370 of 466 Diet seats as Premier Shigeru Yoshida’s cabinet appears re-elected. Communist candidates won only five seats. women candidates faced stiff opposition with few victories. Voter turnout was low, with more than 30 percent abstaining and up to 40 percent in Tokyo.
The Legion announces 90 nominees from Cedar Rapids seven high schools for the 1947 Hawkeye Boys State at Camp Dodge June 15-22. Delegates will be chosen May 8 by school votes on regular machines after student campaigns. Names listed include nominees from Roosevelt Wilson Franklin St Patrick St Wenceslaus McKinley and Immaculate Conception schools with multiple students per school.
Arrangements for a physics building and adding to South Hall at Upper Iowa University have been completed. Dr. W. T. Smith announced plans under the Public Works Administration with a university share of about 25,000 dollars. Charles Allfillish of Decorah, an architect, will supervise. Contractors to be let by the government and the university to F. W. Vawther of Des Moines, with work to start immediately.
Hopes for beer legislation faded as a third conference committee failed to reach agreement. Rep. Clifford M. Strawman announced tentative progress, but two Senate members refused to sign. Speaker Gus Kuercer said no new committee would be appointed, ending the effort.
In the matter of the estate of Joseph Zobach, deceased, Linn County Iowa, 1947 order appoints an administrator. The court notes the document is authenticated in the clerk’s files of the Linn County Court and lists Kubicek Novak as related parties.

Everett Lee Hajek a 19 year old from Marion was fined 25 dollars and costs in police court for drunkenness and handed to the detective bureau where he signed a statement naming two taverns where he bought beer. He was arrested Friday night with two 15 year old boys near McKinley school.
About 3,500 attended the eleventh Allied Industrial League Spring Frolic called Spring Daze at Memorial Coliseum Friday night. Master of ceremonies Dempsy Jones oversaw nine acts including skits, dancing, and music with performers Kit Petrick, Tommy Dochtermann, Leo Roseberry, and the Seven Benders. Bob Welty’s band provided music. Larry Connor chaired, Dick Cook led the program, both Universal Engines staff. Helen Bassin of Iowa Electric Light and Power supervised stage props.
London AP reports the Marquess of Bute, once among the world’s richest figures, died Friday night. The British Press Association estimates his estate value at about 60 million pounds with six castles in Britain and Spain and land holdings around 117000 acres.
In Spokane AP report, Mrs. Martha Ann Morris sought $1,000 from National Casualty Co after her husband died in a Coeur d Alene Idaho traffic crash July 13 1944. The dispute centered on whether death time should be fixed by daylight saving or standard time. Judge Louis F. Bunge ruled for the company, denying the claim.
Widows, minor children and dependent parents of deceased rail road employees entitled to monthly benefits under the Railroad Retirement act must file applications by April 30 to receive full payments. Benefits first became payable Jan 1, and survivors may qualify even if the employee died earlier. If filed before April 30, payments start Jan 1. otherwise, benefits start the month the board receives the application.

In Kankakee Illinois a man using the switchboard quickly handled an emergency call. He declared his mother in law was visiting three weeks and needed a taxi to catch her train. The operator was a man and acted promptly.
