Iowa Child Support Recovery Unit faces declining collections
Since the 2008 recession the Iowa Child Support Recovery Unit has seen lower collections as budget cuts and unemployment rise. The unit collected 27.1 million from unemployment benefits in 2010, dropping to 14.7 million in 2012, with total child support receipts sliding from 351 million in 2009 to about 332 million in 2012 and projected to fall further. The state ranks fourth nationally in efficiency, but staffing fell from 620 in 2008 to 478, while officers chase cash payments from hard to locate parents and inmates.
