Gusty winds forced NASA to postpone the Atlantis mission to repair the international space station. Ground rules cap cross winds at 17 mph, delaying liftoff as conditions remained windier than allowed.
The afternoon launch was halted with nine minutes remaining as winds gusted to 23 mph. NASA canceled the countdown and shuttle commander James Halsell Jr. promised a future attempt. Atlantis carries over a ton of supplies and parts for the space station, orbiting largely empty for 11 years.
