Ambulance service adds advanced coronary care in ambulances
Cedar Rapids Area Ambulance Service installs telemetry heart monitoring in two of five units. Trained technicians, called Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Coronary Trained, can begin on scene coronary treatment with hospital oversight via telemonitoring from Mercy and St Luke's trauma centers. The system costs 50 000 dollars over eight years and raises base call price from 57 to 187 dollars.

The city owned ambulance service, based at Mercy Hospital, adds coronary trained technicians after a 350 hour program with University Hospitals Iowa City and Mercy staff. Training covered ACLS, IVs, and on scene stabilization, with clinicals at Mercy and St. Luke's hospitals and a two week on site internship. Ten EMTs completed the program, including Richard Boots and Timothy Trosky.
