The Federal Reserve reports February department store sales in Des Moines Cedar Rapids Dubuque Sioux City and Waterloo rose versus a year earlier while February sales fell from January in most cities. Des Moines up 11 percent year over year, Cedar Rapids down 2 percent, Dubuque up 12 percent, Sioux City up 12 percent, Waterloo up 11 percent. Across the first two months, gains outpaced last year in all cities except Cedar Rapids which showed declines.
Parker was seized from the jail by masked abductors who entered through a window and took him to a getaway car. Witness C. J. Mondy described the assault as Parker cried for help while attackers used a pistol and sticks. Police considered guards around the courthouse but found no immediate threat.

Mrs Thomas Fanta of Marion died Saturday after a long illness. Born in Belle Plaine Minnesota she moved to Marion in 1954. Survived by husband married in 1902 two sons William Marion Joseph Cleveland Ohio a daughter Mrs Ida Satinsky Cedar Rapids and a sister in Minnesota. Rosary Monday at 7 30 at the funeral home and services Tuesday at 8 30 a.m. Kuba's and 9 a.m. at St. Ludmila's Church with burial at St. John's.

Herbert D. Wingert of 1232 Third Ave SE died Friday at his daughter Mrs Maurice Losey home in Harvey Illinois. Born March 20 1882 in Tipton he will be brought to Barta Hesser's for funeral arrangements to be announced later.

More than 1 000 delegates and wives will attend a banquet Saturday night at the Memorial coliseum to close the Credit Union League convention in Cedar Rapids. Dr B G Gross of the Chicago Isham Memorial YMCA will speak on Nothing Is Wrong with Me Everyone Else Is Crazy. Educational sessions occupied most of Saturday.
