House Ways and Means prompts tax burden shift
The Ways and Means Committee recommended raising $1.1 billion of new revenue by income tax increases instead of Treasury’s $1.521 billion. The plan eases the taxpayer share of the $3.6 billion in new levies with surtaxes starting at 6 percent above $2,000 and a flat $2,000 exemption. The difference of $418 million could be offset by higher excess profits and consumption taxes.
