Iowa filers move toward April 15 with about 75 percent filed. Refunds average 173.60, up from 147.78 last year, as many workers shift to lower brackets after layoffs.
The State Revenue Department report shows 4,170 fewer individual income tax returns for 1981, yet total collections increased by 32.8 million to 663.8 million. Nearly 1.56 million filers, with high earners paying most of the tax, and substantial county-by-county totals are detailed.
Polk County led Iowa in checkoff participation with 26.9 percent of filers. In 1981, Democratic and Republican parties combined received $240,508 from the income tax checkoff, based on 87,183 Democratic, 82,306 Republican, and 71,019 split-designations among the total of state returns. Overall participation statewide was 16.6 percent with higher contributions from those earning 25 000 to 30 000 dollars.
