Early Police Radio Pioneer Helps Cedar Rapids Deploy Crude System
In the early 1930s Cedar Rapids police adopted rudimentary radio gear to dispatch squads. Nemec, a longtime radio enthusiast, spread parts on his car seat and later became the department’s radio engineer for two decades. Detroit’s early one way radio and the 1978 upgrade to UHF are noted, as is Nemec’s clash over a patent and his influence on local amateurs Collins Chandler and Bukacek.

Early ham radio pioneers and the birth of modern two way radio
Nemec recalls hamming days before World War I when parts were scarce and builders improvised. After the war he reestablished his unit and sparked neighborhood interest with a disruptive spark transmitter. He later sold a vacuum transmitter to Collins who used it for a year. Collins notes the FCC era began with a radio license test in 1923. Today's world features police two way radios and ubiquitous CBs, but Nemec avoids having a CB in his car.
