Iowa local governments earned 39.37 million dollars in interest for the year ended June 30 1976. From 1967 through 1976 their total interest earned reached 217.88 million dollars. Auditor Lloyd Smith urged continuing local investments and cautioned against pooling idle funds for state investment.
Smith argues variations in financial needs prevent a uniform investment program. Subdivisions must keep sufficient demand deposits until revenues or liquid investments arrive. Statewide pooling could create social problems he opposes. The study shows total funds of 883,002,058 as of June 30, 1976, with 83.22 percent invested. Interest by counties and cities rose sharply from 1967 to 1976 across multiple entities.
