High Court Sidesteps Auto Pollution Suit
The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that nationwide auto pollution cases are best handled by lower courts, slowing an 18-state effort to force GM Ford Chrysler and AMC to install antipollution devices in 1953 to 1969 vehicles. Justice Douglas noted practical limits and local factors but affirmed the national importance of the issue. The decision leaves state-level actions and district courts to proceed while the government’s antitrust suit was dropped in 194.
