Study Powers of Banning Licenses In Racial Cases

DES MOINES UPI The Iowa Agriculture Department and the governor s commission on human rights will study whether licenses can be revoked from businesses and individuals practicing racial discrimination. Secretary Liddy doubts Iowa law grants license revocation powers but supports enforcing fair employment practices and public accommodations. The commission and the Department of Public Instruction weighed who controls local hiring policies and non discrimination policy requests to districts.

Paving Bid Opened for Franklin Pierce Elementary Site

Midland Construction Co. of Cedar Rapids submitted the low bid of 11873.73 for paving a one block stretch at the east side of the Franklin Pierce elementary site on Forty second street and Marilyn drive NE. Cedar Rapids officials expect to recommend acceptance at the next school board meeting, with E and F Construction Co. and Bertelli and Sons, Inc. close contenders.

Clarence Dripps 65 of Urbana died Thursday night at a Vinton hospital after a long illness. Born June 10, 1898 near Urbana he married Mary Cumberland on Oct 4 1922. Survived by wife two sons Donald W in Vin-ton and Harold E in Minneapolis three grandchildren and four brothers. He ran the Conoco service station in Urbana 1937 to about last year. Services Monday 2:30 p.m. at Urbana Christian Church burial Urbana cemetery. Friends may call Fry and Holland funeral home Vinton contributions to Urbana Christian Church memorial fund.
