Iowa Territory Created in 1838 Surmounts Opposition
The Burlington convention of 1836 pushed for a western Iowa Territory. After heated debates in Congress led by George W. Jones, Senator Calhoun’s daughter Anna aided passage by appearing in the Senate gallery. Van Buren signed the act on June 12, 1838, and Iowa became a territory on July 4.
