President Barack Obama tours a green manufacturing facility in Newton on Earth Day to witness wind energy tower production and reaffirm a comprehensive energy strategy aimed at reducing foreign oil dependence and mitigating climate disruption.
Iowa ranks second nationally in wind generation with about 2 800 megawatts installed and 2 300 wind energy jobs. It also operates 38 ethanol refineries with 3 billion gallon annual capacity and leads U S biofuels output comprising 26 percent of ethanol and 12 percent of biodiesel. As of March ethanol and biodiesel jobs total 2 058 and 302 respectively.
President Obama toured the Newton facility noting its role in renewable energy component supply. He recalled Maytag’s closure and job losses, but highlighted the plant now employing over 100 workers, with many reused to fit a rebuilt local industry.
Palo couple Rick and Blessing Carnes rebuilt quickly after their home flooded five feet high last June. Neighbors returned, but many flooded neighborhoods remain abandoned with mold and bacteria as temps rise. A May 16 Cedar Rapids public health forum will discuss air quality health effects.
Health experts outline a forum at Mercy Medical Center on mold and bacteria testing for flood-damaged neighborhoods. Tom Hart of Linn County Public Health notes mold can become dormant in winter but may pose risks as humidity rises. A study by the University of Iowa and Linn County Public Health is also discussed.
The FDA said it would not appeal a federal judge’s order lifting restrictions on over the counter sales of the emergency contraceptive Plan B to women under 18. Seventeen year olds can now buy the product without a prescription, a move criticized by conservatives as diminishing parental supervision.
Morning-after pill information explains it must be used within 72 hours to reduce pregnancy risk, outlines how it works to prevent ovulation or fertilization, and notes it is not abortion or routine contraception. It states age changes for purchase and possible side effects.
