A Lisbon truck driver, Timothy Buhr, 37, was convicted of drunken driving for a 1984 hayrack fatality involving a Marion man. The Tuesday night rear end crash on Highway 30 near Lisbon injured the other truck driver, Brian Stoneking, 34, who remained hospitalized in fair but stable condition. Investigators continued piecing together hours leading to the collision between two westbound semi tankers from the same company.
A string of hexane fuel explosions in Guadalajara's sewer system tore through the Reforma district, flattening buildings and injuring about 600. Pemex blamed volatile hexane from La Central, while the company denied involvement as authorities deployed the army and searched for victims.
Brian Klosterman, a software engineer in Cedar Rapids, converted a 1980 Volkswagen Rabbit to run on electricity. The car, labeled ELETRIC, aims to be nonpolluting and is driven regularly on his route to Toddville. He repurposed the blown engine, removed the gas tank, and uses a hair dryer as a defroster with plans for further range and braking power enhancements.
The Iowa Senate approved a full gift ban with a 45 to 5 vote, ending acceptance of gifts from lobbyists and others seeking influence. The move comes as part of an ethics reform package that includes a $3 gift cap and a $35 annual meal allowance, plus more amendments.
Washington report shows per capita income grew 1.2 percent in Iowa to 17 505 while nationwide average rose 2.1 percent to 19 082, inflation at 4.1 percent eroding gains. Connecticut led with 25 881, Mississippi 13 343. three-year decline in growth noted.
