Cross median crash toll by state on interstates 2012
In 2012 state data show crashes where vehicles crossed medians on interstates and struck fixed objects or other vehicles. The figures illustrate how crossings into opposing lanes contributed to fatal outcomes across multiple states.
Barriers and rumble strips curb interstate fatalities
Analysis notes that cable median barriers and left and right shoulder rumble strips reduce crossover crashes. Missouri North Carolina and Kentucky push barrier deployments while NTSB investigates a fatal Humboldt State crash. Advocates urge universal median protection as fatalities drop from 5 to 1.1 per 100 million vehicle miles.
