UI Students for Concealed Carry on Campus Backed by UI Chapter
A new University of Iowa student group backs allowing licensed gun carriers on campus to improve safety. The Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, a UI chapter of a national group with about 43 000 members, argues licensed individuals should have the same protection on campus as elsewhere under Iowa law. UI senior August Meyer, a chapter founder, says licensed shooters off campus aren’t necessarily more dangerous.

Cedar Rapids forum splits on local option tax extension
Cedar Rapids held a public forum at Harrison Elementary with mayor Ron Corbett and three panelists supporting a 1 percent local option sales tax extension for 20 years to fund a $375 million flood protection plan. Opponents, including Tea Party member Jim Conklin of Marion, argued the plan was flawed and would burden low income residents while essentially backing a Chamber of Commerce agenda. About 300 attended as discussions framed local funding versus federal aid and tax burdens.
