The Dow edged up 7.86 points to 11,124.92 as markets mixed after strong Apple results. The S&P 500 slipped 1.23 to 1,205.94 while the Nasdaq rose 4.30 to 2,504.61, marking a cautious session with nine of ten gains for the Dow.
Boeing reports a 15 percent drop in first quarter profit to $519 million or 70 cents a share while delivering fewer aircraft. Revenue falls 8 percent to $15.2 billion though analysts expected about 63 cents a share and the company says 787 deliveries remain on track for year end.
Wells Fargo & Co reports first quarter earnings of 2.37 billion, down 1 percent, with per share 45 cents after preferred stock dividends. Revenue rises to 21.4 billion as consumer loan losses linger and refinancings slow, though the bank says it has turned the corner on credit problems. Analysts had expected 42 cents per share.
Iowa Workforce Development reports Cedar Rapids metro unemployment at 7.4 percent in March with 10 900 unemployed in Linn Benton and Jones counties. Employed residents rose to 136 600 while manufacturing remained down from a year earlier. Iowa City area at 5.1 percent. Fort Madison Keokuk area 11.2 percent. Allamakee County 11.9 percent. City rates up overall.
About 60 Cedar Rapids area companies joined City Carton Recycling in a year to collect plastics cans and more in large dumpsters. 300 more use valet service with 96 gallon carts. Sorting happens at 901 Ingleside Dr. The move cuts landfill waste and saves costs, with Modern Piping expanding May 1 and Kirkwood testing rollouts. The Marriott Hotel added plastics to existing recyclables after three months of single stream.
