Des Moines GOP leaders propose adding 18 million to next year’s budget to satisfy Gov. Tom Vilsack’s education needs while aiming to finalize the 2001 budget next week. Everest Expedition Prepares Weeklong Ascent From Camp 1

Iowa City climber Chuck Huss reports Everest Environmental Expedition 2000 will push to higher camps over the week. The group will stay two nights at Camp 1 19 500 feet two or more nights at Camp 2 21 500 feet and one night at Camp 3 24 000 feet before attempting the summit at 29 035 feet. Afterward they will return to base camp 17 600 feet awaiting a four to five day good weather window.

Expedition coverage notes base camp weather and cleanup

KCRG TV9 reports on Huss preparing for an expedition sponsored by Gazette Communications. Base camp Thursday was overcast and cool with sun breaking later. Temperatures ranged from zero to 45 degrees as climbers anticipate warming mornings and occasional clouds and snow afternoons. The team plans to clean up trash left by earlier climbers.
