The forecast calls for fair skies with little temperature change through Friday with highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s across Iowa. Reports include wind, sunrise and sunset times, and precipitation totals. a long list of local births and funeral services follow, naming families and towns from Belle Plaine to Monticello and Manchester.
Senators Byrd and Potter pushed to cut direct economic aid to U S allies while Mansfield proposed reducing the 3.53 billion dollar request for military and reconcilite help. Administration support showed uneven enthusiasm as Senate and House chairs postponed action, highlighting division over Asia focused aid.
John Kingsley 24 of 1413 Fourth Street SE forfeited a $105 bond Thursday after failing to appear in municipal court on a reckless driving charge. He was arrested at 8 17 pm on Wednesday following an accident at Third Street and Tenth Avenue SE. Judge James Patterson also recommended a 30 day suspension of Kingsley’s license.
Labor Leader Clement Attlee flew back from Canada completing a six week tour to seize the drive for the May 26 elections aimed at ousting Prime Minister Eden's Conservative government. He immediately assumed command of campaign efforts upon arrival.
Eight sugar cane workers died and 16 were injured when their pickup struck a bridge and was catapulted 100 feet into the river below in San Juan Puerto Rico.
Republicans clash over income tax and sales tax changes with a conference committee to seek compromise. Senate rejects twice the nomination of W. B. Hamilton for State Board of Education while confirming Plock and Fredrickson. Korean veterans gain $500 tax exemption as toll road debate surfaces and reapportionment bill stalls in Senate. CIO dinner criticizes press labor coverage amid highway funds dispute and parole bill shifts fate back to the Senate. Governor Hoegh nominates Engel to the Employment Security Commission and names advisory board members Poorman Foerstner Miller.
Cedar Rapids units mobilized quickly for a state alert. The 133rd Air Control and Warning squadron led by Major Elroy Novak deployed to the municipal airport within minutes. The 224th Engineer Aviation battalion under Lt. Col. Edward A. Cerny mobilized 96.9 percent of its enlisted strength to guard the armory and Northwestern Bell exchange. Units from 185th Artillery, the 556th Field Artillery, and local TV and radio stations also supported the mobilization with police aiding traffic flow and two howitzers positioned downtown. General Carlton Smith inspected the response and praised the rapid, coordinated effort.
Francis B. O Connor of Cedar Rapids pleaded guilty to buying a 32 caliber H and R revolver under a false name. Judge Charles Penningroth suspended a six month jail sentence on the condition he surrender the gun and his liquor permit. Charged by Willis A. Glasgow, O Connor was arrested by Cedar Rapids detectives after the April 5 purchase at Joe and Cliff's.
Alan Randall 25 of 208 Seventh Street NE began serving four months of a county jail term for a larceny conviction from October 15. The four months were suspended for good behavior but resumed after a disturbance at a Cedar Rapids restaurant, revoking the suspension. The theft involved $35 taken from a Cedar Rapids man on August 27, 1954.
Urban Arens of Marion pled guilty to uttering a forged instrument and received a suspended 10 year sentence at Fort Madison. Judge Floyd Philbrick suspended the sentence on condition Arens restitution for six false checks within six months. Arens was arrested March 21 and originally pleaded innocent before changing to guilty.
Everett C. Short, 24, of 1119 Sixteenth Avenue SW, pled guilty to a drunk driving charge before Judge Charles Penning and was fined $300. Short was arrested by Cedar Rapids police after his car was involved in an January accident. he initially pled not guilty on January 31 but changed to guilty Thursday.
A Cedar Rapids man, 73-year-old Eli W. Huff, pleaded innocent to a larceny charge in Judge Charles Penningroth's court. He allegedly took his brother John, 77, and seized $4100 last December 12. Huff remains free on $1000 bond.
Two wills were admitted to probate on Thursday. The will of Charles A. Elson, who died April 8, leaves a 164 acre Linn county farm and 1000 dollars to daughter Edna M. Perry and a 220 acre Linn county farm to daughter Laverna Listebarger with the remainder split between both daughters. John L. Krall is named executor without bond. The will of C. E. Pearson, who died April 4, names his widow.
Dell G. Van Note route 3 longtime Cedar Rapids area resident and retired farmer died at home after a long illness. Born February 14 1884 in Linn county he was married to Bessie Albaugh in 1904. Surviving wife daughter Elmer Neff two brothers Walter and John and a granddaughter and great grandson. Services Saturday 1 30 p.m. Turner chapel with burial at Cedar Memorial cemetery. Master Masons to meet at 12 30 p.m. at Marion Masonic hall.
Ernest A. Stone 61 of 532 Forest Drive SE Cedar Rapids died in a hospital after a brief illness. Born June 21 1893 in Massena New York he came to Cedar Rapids 13 years ago. A World War I veteran he belonged to First Congregational church Obedience Lodge No 380 AF and AM Anita Hanford post No 5 American Legion and National Association of Cost Accountants. Surviving are son James A. Stone sister Mrs Vernon Duthie Anita and brother Earl Onawa. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery Anita. Funeral arrangements await the son’s arrival.

Services for Antonino Palumbo of 1401 K Street SW who died Tuesday will be at St Patrick’s Church at 9 a m Friday led by Rt Rev Msgr D J Lenihan. Burial follows at Mt Calvary Cemetery with the Rosary at 7 30 p m Thursday at Teahen chapel where friends may call.
The Gazette reports extensive storm damage in Keota with many homes losing storm windows and roofs. Churches including the Christian and Methodist suffered window and water damage. St Mary’s and Federated churches had window losses. One resident found hailstones six and seven inches in circumference. basements and the school agriculture room flooded.
The Iowa House completed action on four school aid bills totaling 22 731 500 annually with general aid 14 335 000 for districts taxing at least 15 mills. Transportation and supplementary aid were also set, with totals varying from governor recommendations. The measures now go to the Senate.
In Chicago Louis E. Wolfson accuses Sewell L. Avery of trying to bar him from Ward's ballot as stockholders prepare to elect a new Montgomery Ward board. A Ward lawyer cites Clayton Act limits on serving on competing boards, while Wolfson vows he will sit on Ward's board. Ballot results expected in weeks after inspectors review proxies.
