Cedar Rapids recruiting station announced enlistment of Robert Dean Hobbie 17 Floyd A. Davie 18 and Guy J. Meskimen in four year terms. All sworn in April 17 at Des Moines and sent to the Marine Recruit Depot for basic training with leave and duty assignments after completion.
Washington officials testified that telephone and telegraph firms knowingly aid bookmakers who take horse race bets. Senator Capehart urged banning interstate racing information and FBI pursuit of a racing odds mastermind. Officials differed on a national syndicate though Cavanaugh asserted its existence from 1935 efforts.
Iowa City hosts the 62nd Iowa Academy of Science at the University of Iowa. About 750 Iowa scientists expected. Alfred E. Emerson of the University of Chicago to speak on Evolution of Animal and Human Societies. W W Salisbury of Cedar Rapids to lecture on radio astronomy at dinner. A bankruptcy petition was filed in federal district court in Cedar Rapids on Thursday by Carl Phillips. He lists debts of 2622 dollars and assets of 350 dollars in his filing.
John R. Kephart files a 1500 suit against the city of Cedar Rapids claiming injuries from a February 21 fall on an icy sidewalk near Seventeenth Street NE and First Avenue. He alleges three fractured ribs and other injuries, loss of six to eight weeks work, $150 in medical expenses, and $1000 in pain, seeking total judgment plus costs.
District Judge Floyd Philbrick ordered the sale of 349 shares of Parlor Furniture Manufacturing Company stock from the estate of Conrad Karlan who died March 10. The Killian Company to receive 101 shares at 182 each and Clarence E. Dilly 248 shares. Dilly pays 20,136 upfront with 25,000 as a note secured by 300 shares. Guardian Bank holds 55 shares in trust for Ralph C. Karlan Jr. The will was probated March 17.
A condemnation commission ordered $370 to two parties for land condemned at the junction of highways 13 and 151 east of Marion. Barclay Securities Company of Cedar Rapids received $190 and George Munier $180. The one acre parcel, located south of the junction, will supply dirt for fill at a truck weighing station construction.
John J. Morrissey aged 20 of 4036 First Avenue E was jailed to serve a six month term for breaking and entering. The sentence, suspended November 20, 1948, was mandated by a munimus ordering issued April 3 by Judge G. K. Thompson after Cedar Rapids police and Deputy Sheriff Pete Whittemore arrested him.
Geneva McCormick pursued a separate maintenance action against James McCormick. the suit was dismissed Thursday on the plaintiff’s motion.
Kenneth Delano, 30, of Pentwater, Michigan, pleaded innocent in district court Friday to embezzlement by bailee. Prosecutors say he took a car from the Wathan Motor Company used car lot on September 10.
In Peoria Illinois two boys Jimmy Chatman nine and Donald Simmons fourteen confessed to killing Benjamin Pannier sixty two and robbing his body to fund a Chicago trip. They stole a rifle cigarets comic books and about forty dollars before abandoning the car and fleeing to Peoria where they spent the night in a hotel lobby before being seized at a bus station.
Gen. Thorpe testifies Lattimore remained loyal to the United States after reviewing his record in the 1930s and 1940s and 1947. Senator Green and Sen. Hickenlooper clash over Budenz testimony as Lattimore declines to comment.

Miss Zella Biglow a Cedar Rapids resident for 31 years died at a local nursing home after a lingering illness. Born near Fort Dodge on August 10 1869 she attended Cornell College and Highland College of Pharmacy and served as postmaster at Wyoming Iowa. She was a Presbyterian and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery Mechanicsville. services will be held at Rohn chapel.
Charles K Brownell 76 of 426 Avenue NW Cedar Rapids died at home after a prolonged illness born March 23 1869 in New York state survived by two daughters Helen Kellogg Ada Hughes of Cedar Rapids two sons Wendell Brownell Elizabeth NJ and Grant of Cedar Rapids five grandchildren and several great grandchildren formerly a painter. DES MOINES AP Sheryl Iona Bronson is 11 days old and weighs 1 pound 15% ounces with an excellent chance of reaching normal size. She remains in an incubator at Still College osteopathic hospital for a long time and may not leave until about August 1. She has fluctuated in weight since birth on April 10 and measures 13 inches long. She is the daughter of Evelyn Bronson 25 Des Moines waitress and has another daughter Diana.
Alfred Baars 50 a farmer five miles south of Elkader near Osborne died about 10 am Friday when his tractor overturned pinning him beneath. He worked at the Art Elvers farm. Survived by wife two brothers Herman Volga Henry Elkader and sister Mrs Arno Gottschalk Elkader.

A Civil Aeronautics Board examiner urged canceling Parks Air Lines Cedar Rapids certificate and awarding the route to Mid Continent Airlines of Kansas City. The plan would link Cedar Rapids with multiple Iowa cities and extend to Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, with two Parks routes redirected to Turner Airlines and Ozark Air Lines respectively.

The Cedar Rapids census district reports one third of its five county area counted with 134 of 348 subdivisions finished. Officials say the Cedar Rapids office is eight percent ahead of this week’s work unit goal and remains ahead of schedule.
