Cedar Rapids seeks state flood protection funds for river barrier
Mayor Ron Corbett says Cedar Rapids will be first to tap a new Iowa flood protection fund. The city council will vote to divert about a year of 1 percent local-option sales tax revenue to serve as local matching funds. The goal is 14 to 15 million dollars locally to pair with state funds for federal flood-protection work on the Cedar River.

Senior centers show funding gap between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids
The Iowa City Johnson County Senior Center draws nearly $600,000 from the city to support an $868,302 budget with dance, book groups, films and tech classes. In Cedar Rapids the Witwer Center operates with no regular public funding and closes early. Myrt Bowers notes the contrast as the Witwer Center’s senior program labels shift away from public sponsorship. A sushi class at the Iowa City center features Yume Hidaka guiding participants through rolling techniques.
