Cotton remains the leading textile fiber with about two thirds of usage, per Iowa State authorities. From 1949 to 1958 cotton rose while wool fell. man-made fibers grew, led by rayon and acetate early, then nylon and others. Home furnishings shifted most toward man-mades, while clothing trends moved toward cotton especially in women’s wear.
Cornell College will stage its eighth annual all campus sing at 8 P.M. Sunday in King Memorial chapel. Twenty selections compete for campus singing honors featuring folk songs hymns spirituals and popular tunes.
First place in the Mitchell movement play Tuesday evening at the Roosevelt hotel went to Mrs. Hugh Montross of Millersburg and Mrs. D. W. Dunhaver, north-south, and Millard Wray of North Liberty with Clayton Mossman, east-west.

Mrs. Robert C. Armstrong named Iowa Mother of the Year at a Cedar Rapids Business and Professional Women's club meeting held Tuesday evening at the Roosevelt hotel. Officers elected include Marcia Traer president Edith Frazier first vice president Irene P. Anderson second vice president Mrs. Carol Shadle and Mrs. Joseph L. Holecek secretaries and Pearl C. Meister treasurer. Directors for a three year term are Marion Ersland Mrs. J. E. LaLone Mrs. George Miller and Patricia Connell.
M E Hughes vice president of Parsons College spoke to 48 Linn County Alumni Association members and guests at Ronneburg restaurant Amana. A fund raising drive was launched and the trimester school plan for the college was discussed with Roger K Loving Cedar Rapids as program chairman.
The Kaper Cutters square dance club will meet Thursday at 6 30 PM at the KC club rooms correcting an earlier report that placed the gathering at the B K corral.
Mr and Mrs Ingram Bixler at 2392 Blake Boulevard SE were honored Tuesday evening with a dinner and card party at the Roosevelt hotel. The event was hosted by fourteen employees of the Midland Farm Management Company of which Mr Bixler serves as president.
Miss Mary Sullivan was honored at a bridal shower for 24 guests hosted by Mrs. L. C. Kolar with co-hostess Mrs. Joseph Prochaska. The couple, daughter of the Frank Sullivans and William Jurgensen, will marry May 28 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Miss Alice Richardson and Thomas Ed win Nevin married April 9 at First Methodist church Reno Nevada. Bride's parents Glen and Mrs. Richardson of Keota Iowa attended. The gown featured Chantilly lace silk organza Sabrina neckline and lace inserts. Barbara Emerson was honor attendant. The bride taught at Echo Loder school and the groom studied at the University of Nevada.
London UPI reports Margaret Truman, daughter of former President Harry S Truman, may resume singing while on a European trip with Clifton Daniel. She says marriage will not end her career and would perform in America if she could balance home life and motherhood. Her children prefer "Pop Goes the Weasel" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy."
Miss Maxine Leah Tayek and John F. Johnson wed in a Monona church service. Miss Marlys Tayek served as maid of honor, with bridesmaids Miss Marietta Johnson and Miss Beverly Barrack. Best man was Everett Johnson. groomsmen included Robert Tayek and Loren Fishler. The couple plans to live in Bagley after June 10.
Dren, Clifton, 3, and William, 1, recall their first trip to Britain in four years and clarify that Princess Margaret’s wedding was not their aim. The speaker notes she has never claimed to be a close friend, though they are “official friends” of the princess.
King's Daughters Eleven members of the Service Seekers circle elected officers and planned contributions at a Tuesday meeting at Mrs. George Prastka's home. New officers include Mrs. Robert Fuller president and Ellen Miller, with several members contributing to Linn County room at Fort Madison Home, the education fund, Camp Lookout, and the cancer fund. The group also received a charter from the Center. The next meeting is set for May 3 at Mrs. Rice's home.

Senator Thomas Martin poses with his administrative assistant of 17 years Miss Jane Bittner who won the first annual Congressional Secretary of the Year award from about 6000 congressional employees. The 58 year old Bittner retires this year after 36 years on Capitol Hill, having served through five presidents. She hails from Harrisburg Pennsylvania.
Miss Jean Annette Jacobi and Eugene L. Kline wed at St Pauls Catholic Church in Newhall on Monday at 9 in a ceremony led by Rev Joseph Weber. Sisters Karin and Mary Jacobi served as maid of honor and bridesmaids, with Donald Kline as best man and groomsmen Robert Fuhrmann and Donald Hamilton. James Jacobi and Howard Gilroy were ushers. A wedding dance followed at Swisher.
Epsilon Sigma Alpha members met Tuesday for a progressive dinner starting at Mrs. William Carle’s home 3025 Oakland Rd NE. Guests Mines, Pirie, Lutz and Cunningham attended. Officers elected include Mrs. Richard Uhiik president Georgia Spencer vice president Mrs. Charles Johnson secretary Mrs. Robert Schmidt treasurer and Mrs. Robert Rutherford city council representative.
Camp Fire Ki-Ka-Ta-Top members held an officer election Tuesday at Mrs. L. J. Shebetka’s home, 1205 Second St. SW. Elected were Martha Moore president Kay Gilgore vice president Patty Wilson secretary Sue Peyton treasurer Charlene Hunter reporter and Linda Stumpff telephone. Happy Blue Bird group at Hayes school hosted Christine Black’s eighth birthday party. Leader Mrs. Don Christophersen, 1784 Mallory St. SW, was hostess assisted by Mrs. Ray St. Germain.
Mr and Mrs Carl Dresselthaus and children Ann and Paul of Sioux City and Dr and Mrs Robert Frost with children James Jean and John of Peoria returned home Monday after visiting the women's parents Wesley Kubik s at 1422 Eighth Ave SE for several days.
A dinner at the Embassy club honored Mr and Mrs Niels Nissen of 1431 Fifth Ave SE after their marriage on Friday. About thirty people attended including White Shrine officers and spouses. A group gift was given to the couple, whose former name is Dorothy Stickel Snider.
