CAPE CANAVERAL AP A Thor intermediate range ballistic missile exploded on its launching pad Saturday. The blast was heard for miles as Cocoa residents reported a dull deep thud like subterranean dynamite. A few beach observers saw the 150 ton rocket blow up with a black smoke ball rising high. The Air Force said the attempted launch failed due to technical difficulties. No injuries and superficial pad damage were reported. Newsmen were surprised by the secrecy of recent attempts. It was the second sneak shot in two days following a Polaris test fired with no advance word. The Polaris is designed for submarine launches. Three Thor tests have been successful, one reaching 3645 miles more than twice its estimated range.
Mrs Joseph M Becicka 81 of Mt Vernon died in a Cedar Rapids hospital after a brief illness. Born in Czechoslovakia Aug 24 1876 she came to the United States as a girl and married Apr 4 1899. Surviving are her husband two daughters six sons and a wide range of relatives. Services at First Presbyterian Ely at 2 p.m. Monday conducted by Rev Francis Laren with burial at Truhlar cemetery near Ely. Friends may call at Brosh chapel Cedar Rapids Sunday and until 9 30 a.m. Monday when the body will be taken to the church.
Clara Irene Rawson slain wife of Darrell Rawson of 1134 Sixteenth St SE Cedar Rapids died Friday after a long illness. Born March 8 1917 she was married in Cedar Rapids and was a Sinclair Memorial church member. Mrs. Lela Beatty of Cedar Rapids learns of the sudden death Friday of her son in law Linus D. Hunt of Oklahoma City. Former Cedar Rapids resident. Survived by wife Elizabeth and daughter Betty Jane of New York City. Services set for Monday morning in Oklahoma City.

Detective Captain John Kuba issued a home owner alert after the city faced its sixth and seventh prowling incident in nine days.
