Contempt power offered purge option in Cedar Rapids case

Cedar Rapids attorney Gary Robinson was found in contempt by Judge Larry Conmey and ordered jailed for 48 hours with 19 hours suspended. Inflation hits eight year high in March surge

The Labor Department reports a 0.5 percent rise in consumer prices in March pushing inflation to the highest level since 1982. Economists warn inflation remains a chronic problem with annual rates hitting 8.5 percent through Q1 and many forecasting higher yearly increases. Industrial production rose 0.7 percent as housing construction fell 9.3 percent to 1.32 million annual units.

Deases Mistrial Declared In Ames Murder Trial

A mistrial was declared in the first degree murder trial of Edward Deases after one potential juror allegedly lied about impartiality. District Judge M D Seiser in Cedar Rapids ordered a new start after screening about 170 jurors over two days. Deases is charged in the May 28 1989 strangulation and decapitation of 20 year old Jennifer Ann Gardner in the Ames apartment she shared with Edward’s older brother.

Dr Craig Thompson of the Strawberry Point Medical Center urged a state panel to expand advanced life support services to other rural communities. He said rural health care in Iowa faces survival challenges and called for prompt, appropriate changes to realize hope for the sector.
