Ex-treasurer opposes Iowa funds in South Africa divestment
Maurice Baringer, IPERS investment supervisor, argues pulling Iowa retirement funds from South Africa would harm investments and fail to affect apartheid. The Iowa Divestment Coalition urges divestment, noting about 300 million dollars or 14 percent of IPERS assets tie to South Africa via large oil companies and John Deere. Baringer warns earnings could fall, reducing benefits or raising contributions, and says U.S. capital is only a fraction of South Africa’s funding. He cites past J P Stevens divestment as a loss and notes American firms’ role in supporting anti-racism efforts while maintaining their South African operations.
