Des Moines AP Sioux City named winner of the 1950 all Iowa traffic safety contest for cities over 50 thousand. Other group winners include Dubuque Boone Cedar Falls Storm Lake and Iowa Falls with awards to be presented by Gov Beardsley. Awards also honor fire prevention aviation farm and school safety achievements.

Tama woman Mrs. Oscar Van De Walle received the Golden Rule Award for her good neighbor work. The recognition was announced on the Mutual network Tell Your Neighbor program on KCRG 1600. She also received a certificate of Golden Rule club membership and a flatware service for eight. The nomination came from Mrs. Anna Krotoska of Cedar Rapids. The Gazette noted her Red Cross and nursing aid to neighbors in a March 18 article.

Youth, 18, Shot While Fleeing from Tavern
Des Moines AP deputy sheriffs arrested 18 year old Keith Fritz at Mercy hospital after a shooting during a tavern burglary. Fritz, injured with shotgun wounds, admitted burglarizing Happy Landings tavern as he fled. owner Mike Aninia said about 100 dollars and 20 cartons of cigarettes were missing. William Smith said he shot Fritz as he ran from the tavern rear door.

Major Shirlaw plane found intact in Korea
Special to The Gazette reports Major Ronald Shirlaw's jet fighter, listed as missing in Korea, was found intact nine miles north of the 38th Parallel in enemy territory. His wife in What Cheer has been notified that he radioed fuel shortage and landed on a river bank. his capture or status is not yet known.

Ivan Coon, held in West Union on forgery charges, was identified by two Manchester men Merritt Barger and Ray Rashid as the man who passed three bad checks in Manchester last week. Checks for 10 dollars at Becker's grocery and Hurdle shoe store, and a 20 dollar check at Gildner's, were charged to a home address listed as Adaza Iowa. Sheriff Longseth said Coon will be returned to Manchester after West Union action.
