Iowa budget talks aim to seal overall number this week
Negotiators from the Iowa House and Senate pursue a final overall budget figure for 2013 as Gov Branstad's proposal and the Senate differ by about 1.0 billion. House Republicans back 6.06 billion while the governor seeks 6.24 billion and Democrats push 6.3 billion. Leaders say progress narrows differences on higher education funding tax credits and property relief. A deal could allow adjournment this week with conference committees to finalize spending.
